Long-duration smart weather balloons plus AI forecasting models for better weather forecasts
WindBorne Systems designs, builds and operates Atlas, which it describes as the largest weather balloon constellation in the world: hundreds of autonomous, long-duration smart balloons launched each month that collect in-situ atmospheric soundings over under-observed regions such as oceans and the poles. It fuses that data with its own AI weather models, WeatherMesh and MetaMesh, and sells observations and forecasts to governments and businesses including energy traders and utilities. Founded in 2015 and based in Redwood City, California, it has worked with NOAA's National Weather Service, the U.S. Air Force and Navy. On October 12, 2026 TechCrunch reported a new U.S. Air Force data contract worth up to $49 million, with $1.7 million ordered so far.
