About

Universal Quantum is a University of Sussex spinout, founded in 2018 and led by CEO and co-founder Dr. Sebastian Weidt, that is building utility-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers on a modular trapped-ion architecture. Its iQPU (integrated Quantum Processing Unit) is a trapped-ion chip made on a standard 200mm commercial foundry line that uses global microwave control rather than laser-based qubit control and integrates classical control electronics with the quantum layer. Chips are linked with UQConnect, an electric-field link that transfers qubits directly between modules, and the systems run without dilution refrigeration. The company also builds firmware, error-correction and application software, works with Rolls-Royce on quantum computational fluid dynamics, and was awarded a €67 million contract by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in 2023. In October 2026 it raised a Series A of more than $100 million co-led by DCVC and Firgun Ventures to expand in the US, Japan and its Hamburg hub.
