About

Vates is a French company that builds an open-source virtualization platform designed to give organisations control over their infrastructure and an alternative to proprietary hypervisors such as VMware. It develops XCP-ng, a free, open-source Xen-based type-1 hypervisor, and Xen Orchestra, a web-based management and backup console, and sells Vates VMS, a turnkey stack with commercial support, updates and SLAs, plus storage, backup and observability add-ons. Vates has customers across 100 countries, with most revenue coming from outside France and North America as its largest market, and joined Gartner's Magic Quadrant for virtualization in 2026. Olivier Lambert is CEO and co-founder. In October 2026 it raised €30 million from IRIS's Growth fund and Bpifrance's Large Venture fund to develop the next generation of its platform and expand internationally.
