Tolan
Voice-first AI companion app with customizable characters that act as a friendly guide through life
About
Tolan (formerly Portola) is a San Francisco-based startup, founded in 2023 by CEO Quinten Farmer, Evan Goldschmidt and Ajay Mehta, that makes the Tolan AI companion app. Each user gets their own Tolan character that listens, remembers and helps with everyday life, from organising projects and meal plans to caring for family. The app is voice-first and can use photos and video. According to Upstarts Media, about 250,000 people use it each month. In October 2026 Tolan raised 30 million US dollars from Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Homebrew, which it says it will use to add its first free tier and expand what the companion can do.
