Recycled, low-carbon cement made from demolition waste in steel recycling furnaces
Reclinker is a Cardiff, Wales-based climate tech company commercialising a process developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge and described in a 2024 Nature paper. It recovers old cement paste from demolition waste and feeds it into the electric arc furnaces that already recycle scrap steel, where it is turned back into clinker, producing recycled steel and new cement together without a kiln, quarried limestone or fossil-fuel heat. The company says the process cuts cement emissions by more than 50% at cost parity with conventional cement. It has produced thousands of tonnes at 7 Steel UK's Cardiff plant and secured first commercial sales. On October 5, 2026 it announced an oversubscribed £10M Series A co-led by Clean Growth Fund and AP Ventures, with the Development Bank of Wales and Kibo Invest joining existing investors Zero Carbon Capital and Cambridge Enterprise, to move to full commercial production in Cardiff and expand to other EAF sites in Europe and the US.
