About

Number 8 Bio is an Australian agricultural biotechnology company working on how livestock are fed. Its product BetterFeed uses a proprietary organic small molecule, delivered as a slow-release bolus for grazing beef cattle and sheep, to inhibit enteric methane and redirect feed energy that would otherwise be lost to methane back into production; the company reports methane reductions of up to 50% in early beef cattle trials. It was co-founded by CEO Dr Tom Williams, previously a senior lecturer in metabolic engineering at Macquarie University, and Dr Alex Carpenter. In October 2026 it announced new investment from Uniseed and UniSuper alongside continued support from existing investor Innovation Victoria, and it has previously won a $1.7 million grant to scale and trial its capsules across Australia.
