AI-guided microbial upcycling of waste into feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel
Neela Biotech is a Cambridge, UK startup converting food, agricultural and forestry waste into fatty acids, a precursor for HEFA-based sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), through an AI-guided Controlled Microbial Upcycling process. The technology builds on anaerobic digestion, so it can be deployed at existing biogas plants rather than new facilities, aiming to lower capital costs and give plant operators a new revenue stream. Founded by Dr Deepanshu Singh (CEO) and Friederike Nintzel (CTO), building on research from the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering, the company raised a £2.1 million pre-seed round in October 2026 led by Elbow Beach with Ascension, Cambridge Enterprise Ventures, Ventures Together and angels, to move to a pilot-scale trial at a biogas plant. It is part of the IAG innovation programme and has grant funding from Innovate UK and the Henry Royce Institute.
