Japanese startup developing a helical-type fusion power plant
Helical Fusion is a Tokyo-based company developing a commercial helical-type fusion reactor, building on about 70 years of Japanese fusion research. It was founded in October 2021 as a spinout of the National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS), and also has a US subsidiary, Helical Fusion USA. Its Helix Program roadmap covers demonstrating high-temperature superconducting magnets and a combined blanket-divertor system, an integrated demonstration with the Helix HARUKA device in the mid-2030s, and then its first commercial power plant, Helix KANATA. In October 2026 it announced a ¥3.23B second close of its Series B with new shareholders including Fuji Electric, Fujikura, Tokyo Gas, KKT, Urata and Kepple Group, bringing the Series B to ¥5.93B and total funding including grants and loans to ¥13.05B (per the company and BRIDGE).
