Frontier AI research lab working on data-efficient training and more efficient use of GPUs
Flapping Airplanes is a San Francisco AI research lab founded in late 2025 by Ben Spector (CEO), Asher Spector and Aidan Smith. It describes itself as a frontier data efficiency lab and is working on ways to train AI models with less data and compute and to get more performance out of each chip, including writing its own GPU software such as megakernels that run an entire program on a GPU as a single kernel. The team of a couple dozen people works across kernels, pre-training, post-training and inference. It has no product on sale yet. It raised a 180 million dollar seed round in January 2026 and in October 2026 a 1 billion dollar Series A at a reported 6 billion dollar valuation, co-led by Index Ventures and Lux Capital with Sequoia Capital, GV, Kleiner Perkins and Nvidia participating.
