Brings proven human medicines to dogs and cats through FDA approval
Familiar Therapeutics is a Redwood City, California biotech company that licenses the veterinary rights to drugs already researched for human disease from pharmaceutical and biotech partners, then leads the clinical development, manufacturing and FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine work needed to get them approved for dogs and cats. Founded in 2026 by Elizabeth Iorns and Dan Knox (co-founders of Science Exchange), it says it has built four lead and nine earlier-stage programs spanning oncology, neurology, cardiology, respiratory disease and immunology. Its lead program, FAM-010, targets canine hemangiosarcoma, a cancer with no FDA-approved treatment, with a pilot study planned at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. It launched in October 2026 with a $5 million seed round led by Pioneer Fund, Icehouse Ventures and BreakTHRU.
