Commercial fusion energy company building the SPARC demonstration device and fusion power plants
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) describes itself as the world's largest commercial fusion energy company. It is building SPARC, a fusion demonstration device it aims to turn on in 2027, as a step toward commercial fusion power plants, using superconducting magnets to confine plasma. In October 2026 CFS announced an $85 million U.S. CHIPS Act award from the Department of Commerce to develop silicon carbide power electronics, radio-frequency power generators, radiation-hardened control electronics and AI hardware adapted for fusion power plants.
