Data engine for AI protein engineering, testing millions of protein designs in parallel
Caravel Bio is a Portland, Oregon startup building a data engine for the biomolecular frontier. It tests millions of protein designs in parallel at a fraction of a cent each, using cell-free synthesis, microfluidic droplets and spore display, to generate training data for AI protein engineering, including proteins with non-canonical amino acids. It is led by founder and CEO Trevor Nicks and won a $1.25M NSF SBIR Phase II grant in October 2026.
